Fairlie Village Green playground gets a make-over

The Village Green playground in Fairlie is getting a bit of a make over or tidy up.

When Council demolished the old toilets we asked the community for their ideas and wishes for the site. The majority of people who responded said they wanted to see the playground fenced along the state highway to help keep the children safe.

Work will now start on the 28th April to install a fence along the Talbot Street and Main Road (state highway) sides of the playground. The fence will have gates to allow access and the Village Green side will remain open to allow direct access from the rest of the park. Emergency services and contractor vehicles will also be able to access the area when necessary.

The fence will be a 1.2m high ‘pool type’ fence allowing visibility while keeping our little people safe. The other improvement you’ll see happening is the installation of shade sails over the playground. The posts are installed and the sails will be made and installed for the next summer.  The community has raised funds for this work and our thanks go to all who have contributed, including the following groups and contractors:

  • L& L Construction
  • Plunket Society
  • Cancer Society
  • Felipe Silva Studio for the design of the Shades Sail
  • Kotuku Saddlery for the Shade Sails

In addition, should funds allow, future development on the site of the old toilets may include seating or a BBQ.
