The Local Government Commission has approved the council’s proposed changes to representation in the Mackenzie District.
This confirms that at the next election – to be held this October - the Mackenzie District will be divided into three wards – Pukaki, Opuha and Tekapo.
The Council shall comprise of the Mayor and 7 members who shall be elected as follows –
- 3 councillors elected by the electors of Pukaki ward
- 3 councillors elected by the electors of Opuha ward
- 1 councillor elected by the electors of Tekapo ward
(The number of councillors is determined by the population of each ward area)
There shall be three communities as follows:
- Twizel Community comprising the area of Pukaki ward.
- Tekapo Community comprising the area of Tekapo ward.
- Fairlie Community, comprising the area of Opuha ward.
The membership of the community board for each community shall be as follows:
- The Twizel Community Board will comprise four elected members and one member appointed to the community board by the council representing Pukaki ward.
- The Tekapo Community Board will comprise four elected members and one member appointed to the community board by the Council representing Tekapo ward.
- The Fairlie Community Board will comprise four elected members and one member appointed to the community board by the Council representing Opuha ward.
