Council is updating the Mackenzie District Plan to ensure the district can grow in a sustainable way, while protecting the things that make the place so special.
The Mackenzie District Plan largely became operative in 2004, and many elements are well out of date and do not meet our statutory requirements under the Resource Management Act 1991. This means Council is required by law to meet certain obligations.
The Mackenzie District Plan Review is continuing to progress. Stage Three of the Review is just about to begin, which covers the rural parts of the district including the following topics:
- Eastern Mackenzie Rural and Natural Environment
- Western Mackenzie Rural and Natural Environment
- Sites and Areas of Significance to Māori
- Subdivision, Earthworks and Transport
- Rural Lifestyle Zone
- Hazards and Risks
- Energy and Infrastructure
- Potential New Industrial Area in Twizel
More information about each of these issues is available online at letstalk.mackenzie.govt.nz/dpr-stage-three
Council is just about to kick off community consultation on Stage Three. As part of this we will be launching a survey which seeks to understand what people think about the above topics. We’ll be using the feedback we receive to help develop the preferred options before presenting them to council. This survey will be live online and available in hard copy at council offices from 13 March – 14 April.
We are also holding community open days throughout March. These are an opportunity for you to meet with the project team to discuss the District Plan Review and the issues being covered in Stage Three.
