The second stage of works for willow tree removal around the Lake Alexandrina Outlet Bridge is planned to start on Monday 18 March.
Significant biodiversity in the area means that in-stream works cannot take place between April-February for trout spawning and Crested Grebe nesting, hence the timing of the works.
To avoid disruption to these species, the removal of the root mass and deepening the streams channel will take place from Monday 18 March.
Council is coordinating works alongside Fish & Game. who are redeveloping the spawning beds in the creek at the same time, in order to minimise disturbance to the outlet creek.
Council’s works are limited to the area immediately above the outlet creek bridge and include the following activities:
- Cutting stumps of the trees already removed to 300mm above ground level, leaving stumps to stabilise the bank.
- Re-painting of these stumps with Glyphosate to stop willow regrowth
- Removal of the root mass immediately upstream of the bridge to encourage water flow through the outlet creek.
- Disposal of the root mass in the green waste pile by Lake McGregor.
