Work is currently taking place by Fulton Hogan on the building of a concrete ‘washover’ ford on Nixons Road, Fairlie.
The ford replaces an existing ford prone to washouts, and an adjacent bridge at the end of its economic life, no longer safe to handle vehicles.
Before work was underway an ecological assessment was made of the site, the ecologist assessment team finding approximately 132 fish in the stream nearby, including the 'at risk' Canterbury galaxias, and a Long finned eel.
The earthworks are being done by High Country Earthworks, while Lakes Construction are doing boxing and concrete work.
