Our two unfortunate water outages in Twizel have had people asking us if this is something they can expect more of. We really hope not, but this is an attempt to explain what’s going on.
Our contactors have been working to replace the ring main in Mackenzie Drive, Twizel. This is the original major main that supplies the town.
The work has been going well but is now at the point where they are installing the major valve connectors. The new main is significantly larger than the old one and they are having to work in constrained areas surrounded by other infrastructure – water pipes, phones, optical cables etc. While our contractors are being as careful as they can, we have had two unfortunate accidents which have meant that pipes have had to be shut down in order to be repaired.
While we are doing everything we can to avoid a recurrence, accidents can happen. We recommend you use this time to check your emergency water supply, make sure you have enough, and maybe give it a bit of a refresh at the same time. We hope you don’t need to use it soon, but there’s no harm in being prepared.
In the meantime, we will continue to keep you informed as promptly as we can of any other unplanned incidents.
